In our experience the vast majority of these dogs are either just scared in the stressful crowded kill shelter environment or have not been properly socialized with other dogs. These are the seniors, the special medical needs and those that the shelter has deemed rescue only for “behavior.” The latter are most often euthanized as they are labeled dog aggressive or human aggressive. Plus he still needs to do his therapy twice weekly at a cost of $176 per week. Henry will need the hardware replaced once the infection is healed, his bones are not fused in his front leg/wrist. The U of M quoted us $5200 to do his surgery on the 21st, by the grace of God it only came to $3,800.īut we are not getting too excited his care is not over quite yet. He has been doing therapy 2-3 times per week at the cost of $88 each time, he has been being seen by the surgery department to follow up on his progress, well they have caught an infection in his left front leg/wrist the hardware was being rejected and needed to be removed, he was scheduled to have all the hardware in his left front wrist/leg on 3/21, the night before he started to have discharge from his incision on his back end, which that now needed to be removed, thank goodness the bones are fused so he will not need any other procedure there! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic.
Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! The situation seemed dire.īut as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!!ĭespite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him.Ī complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help.
